The original CORTEN A received the standard designation ASTM A 242 TYPE-1("COR-TEN A") from the ASTM International standards group. Newer ASTM grades are ASTM A 606 for thin sheet. All alloys are in common production and use. ASTMA242 is hot rolled products of structural steels in technical deliveryconditions with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. It was first used in buildings in 1958 because it has anti-corrosion properties, and was widely used for bridges, trains, cars, trucks, container, harbor construction, oilplatforms and industrial facilities and so on. It has a very low base cost amongwrought alloy steels in the same category. In addition, it has the lowestembodied energy and a very low tensile strength. It isa copper chromium alloy steel this alloy displays a greater level of resistance to atmospheric weathering when compared to other unalloyed steels. Its chemical composition promotes the early formation of an adhering protectivelayer of rust when exposed to the elements. The mechanical characteristics and the resistance to atmospheric corrosion form this steel, the best product forthe fabrication of agricultural vans and railway wagons, structures of bridges, water pipes, fans, chimney, sand boilers. The natural finish does notnormally require any form of maintenance such as painting, which makes thematerial a highly cost effective alternative to other structural steels. Mainly used for construction of tanks, containers, bridges, frame structures, vehicles, etc with the request of welded, bolted, etc.
